Fall-Winter Safe Driving Tips

by WAHOUSES

Data indicates that vehicle accidents significantly increase during the darker and wetter weather that is characteristic of our Fall-Winter season. This poses a particular concern for collisions involving vehicles and pedestrians.

To prevent accidents in the upcoming months, here are some general tips to keep in mind.

  • Stay vigilant and never make assumptions on the road
  • Be conscious of hydroplaning and its potential dangers
  • Use caution when braking to ensure a safe stop
  • Even during daylight hours, turn on your headlights for increased visibility
  • Reduce your speed and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles

Additionally, there are specific tips to promote pedestrian safety that we've outlined below.

For Drivers

  • Always be on the lookout for pedestrians, especially in low visibility conditions or at night
  • Slow down and be prepared to stop when making turns or approaching crosswalks
  • Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and leave enough space for other drivers to see them
  • Never operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Avoid speeding, especially in areas with a high presence of people, children, or school zones
  • Be extremely cautious when reversing and always check for pedestrians.

For Pedestrians

  • Adhere to traffic rules, obey signs, and follow signals
  • Utilize sidewalks whenever they are available
  • If there are no sidewalks, walk facing oncoming traffic and stay as far away as possible
  • Cross streets at designated crosswalks or intersections, being aware of turning vehicles
  • In the absence of a crosswalk or intersection, find a well-lit area with good visibility to cross
  • Refrain from consuming alcohol or drugs while walking, as they impair judgment and abilities
  • Be cautious of cars entering or exiting driveways, as well as those backing up in parking lots
